How to Choose the Right Tattoo Artist in Sydney (And What to Look For)

Choosing a tattoo artist is one of the most important decisions you’ll make about a tattoo —
probably more important than the design itself. The right artist will guide you through the
process, refine your idea, and execute it in a way that lasts.
Here’s what I’d look for, as both an artist and someone who genuinely cares about your
result.

1. Make sure their portfolio matches what you want
This sounds obvious, but it’s the step most people skip. Every tattoo artist has a style —
even if they claim to do everything. Look at their recent work, not just their best pieces. Do
their lines have a quality and consistency you trust? Does the healed work still look sharp?
If you want fine line or botanical work specifically, find an artist who specialises in it. A great
traditional artist and a great fine line artist require completely different technical skills.
2. Look at healed results, not just fresh tattoos
A fresh tattoo looks great on almost anyone. What you want to see is how work holds up after 6–12 months of healing. Many artists now post healed results on Instagram — this is a
sign of confidence in their work.
3. Ask about the design process
Do they create custom designs, or are you choosing from a flash sheet? Neither is wrong,
but it matters for what you want. If you have something specific and personal in mind, you
want an artist who will work with you on it — not hand you a catalogue.
With Krink Ink, every design is created from scratch based on your idea, placement and body. I
don’t repeat designs.
4. Trust your gut about communication
Your artist should make you feel comfortable asking questions. The consultation (or inquiry)
process tells you a lot about what working with someone will be like. Do they respond
clearly? Do they take your idea seriously?
5. Prioritise quality over price
A tattoo is permanent. The cost difference between an artist you’re unsure about and one
you genuinely trust is worth it — especially for something detailed like fine line work, which
requires experience to execute properly.
